Debbie Y.J. Lin
“I have always compartmentalized my identity; perhaps it has to do with the displacement of my upbringing. Five days before my twelfth birthday, I lost my older brother to leukemia, and grief and I became inseparable. As someone who creates with less bulk (minimal tools), and more layers, I prod and ponder about the fragility of life. The carelessness of words and actions are dangerous. And I guess, personally, I take more heed when creating, because the last thing I’d want, is to contribute to the mindless waste that has accumulated. I’d rather say nothing, than say a bunch of stuff that is unthought-out. But at the same time, what is the point of staying silent, when I do have so much to say, even if it’s only a whisper.”
Debbie Y.J. Lin (dbyj) is a Chinese Canadian Californian interdisciplinary artist interested in site specific work focused in the architecture of human sound, interpersonal gestures and languages. She began playing classical piano at four and having performed as a vocalist at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and Carnegie Hall, she explores the reconciliation of performative and reflective time-based works, often experimenting with a hybrid of sound, found, upcycling, and video to transcribe the transience of thought, memory and emotion through the lens of Faith and emerging technology. She graduated cum laude from UCLA with a B.A in Music Education, summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a M.M in Music Production and Technology, and received her M.A. in Media Studies from The New School of Public Engagement.
She made her European museum debut with the"cluttermonster" installation at Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe and Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia Spain, and followed up with her three movement composition during Berlin Art week 2017, and Loop Barcelona in 2018.
Debbie’s works have been shown and/or privately collected in the US, UK, Canada, South Korea, China, Germany, Spain, Israel, Sweden and Norway; she is currently based in Los Angeles and New York, consulting in creative expressions and producing a virtual pop up micro art residency gather.art
